8 million pizzas a day. Home consumption is growing
Eight million pizza a day a day and other mind-boggling numbers.
Here is another good reason to pay homage to tomorrow’s most famous Italian culinary product.
In fact, on February 17th, World Pizza Day is celebrated and various events are scheduled where the margherita pizza will be the undisputed queen.
If it is true, as a study by the CNA states, that the average per capita consumption has almost doubled compared to some years ago, going from five to eight million pizzas, it is striking that it is always the classic pizza, preferred by the 80% of Italians compared to 20% who prefer gourmet pizza.
Home consumption is growing. By now, 58% of Italians enjoy it at home and no longer in a pizzeria.
The ‘homemade’ pizza fashion has conquered almost 14 million do-it-yourself pizza makers, even if the “pizza of the pizzeria”, eaten on the spot (42%) or ordered and taken home (29%), remains always the most consumed (71%).
From what emerges from a Doxa survey, the reason is to be found in the technological evolution of tools (box for scooters, thermal bags) which, compared to 20-30 years ago, retain their heat and crunchiness at best during home transport.
According to the survey, the pizzeria is no longer the main place of consumption: 58% of the pizza is eaten at home.
In any case, even if the fashion of homemade pizza has now conquered many Italians, the “pizza of the pizzeria” is still the most consumed (71%). And the daisy beats everyone, chosen by 45% of Italians. Over half of Italians (57%), however, are not ‘loyal’ to the same pizza and love to change.
The survey also showed that one-third of Italians (36%) choose beer when they eat pizza (the most popular is the clear average on tap and strictly with foam for 60% of respondents).
Research has also shown that round pizza has the upper hand over other formats and is preferred in combination with fries. Finally, in the choice of the products of the recipe, the dough with 00 flour is preferred
Almost 150,000 shops sell pizza in Italy, of which 76,357 are real catering establishments, 40,000 are restaurant-pizzerias and about 36,300 bar-pizzerias.
There are almost 105 thousand pizza makers every day, but over 200,000 on weekends.
Pizza and beer, a much-loved proposal – recalls Assobirra – that arises from special circumstances: “In the fifties – tells Alberto Frausin, president of AssoBirra – the pizzerias did not have the license to give alcohol with an alcohol content higher than about 8% vol.
With wines and spirits cut off, space therefore for beers, which only in rare cases exceed that gradation. This all-Italian combination worked perfectly, allowing beer, until then consumed above all in bars, to make itself known and appreciated as a meal drink, in combination with a heavy weight of our gastronomic tradition “.
